So, no, I haven’t met Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps it’s unfair to call him an “influence” but this book showed me the guts he had to put all of his competitors on his team. Even in today’s world, that just seems crazy.
Yet, the lesson I learned is that we need to embrace dissent sometimes. A team that has individuals with the same goal, but different methods can create solutions that a team with similar methods cannot. I haven’t been able to have that degree of experience with this, but it strengthened my resolve to make sure meetings are safe places for ideas, no matter how contrary they are. It also showed me some shortcomings I had early on in my career with how I handled those who seemed opposed to me.
